Because it's Easter, I've decided to do a bit of Easter Baking.

So on the menu this weekend is Hot Cross Buns. I've never made them before, and I've only ever eaten shop bought ones, and I have to say I've never actually been a huge fan of them, but I thought I'd give them a go anyway.

For a recipe using yeast, this is probably as simple as it get - only 1 rise, no kneading until your arms fall off, my idea of a handy recipe. I think the hardest thing about the recipe was making sure the milk was at the right temperature, too cold and the yeast doesn't activate, too hot and it kills the yeast. I've found the best way to check the temp is ok, is to just stick your finger in the milk, i should be warm but not hot enough to burn.

So,I guess the big question now is... are they nice??

Yes. Yes they are, I will never pick up a packet of Hot Cross Buns in a shop again, I was so shocked at the difference in both the taste and the texture of the homemade and shop bought buns.

This recipe is perfect for beginners, nothing tricky at all in it. They are quick to make, about less than 2 hours in total, including your proving time. I highly recommend everyone give them a try this Easter.
